Battle of the Bands - March 13th Eagle Theater Pontiac MI (posted 4/19/09)
On Friday March 13th we (all the members of Six Syllable Sin) met at Bruce’s house to embark on a journey that would take us to The Eagle Theater in Pontiac Michigan where we would participate in a 13-band battle of the bands. With the gear all packed we hit the road for a two-hour drive to Pontiac to make the 2:30pm load in time.
It was a nice day, the sun was out and by the time we reached The Eagle Theater the temperature was in the mid 50’s, it was a great day for a road-trip. We unloaded our gear while several other bands were doing the same. I was impressed by size and the layout of The Eagle Theater with its huge dance floor, huge stage and couldn’t wait to play.
The show didn’t start until 4:30pm and we wouldn’t play until 11:00pm so we had some time to kill and headed out to get a room and grab a bite to eat. Bruce and I would stay the night while Jodon and Scott would head back home. We ate at the hotel and headed back up to the room to relax a little before the show.
Before long it was time to head out, we wanted to get there in time to catch a few bands before we were to go on. Bruce and I decided we needed to pick up some beer for after the show and would stop off on the way to pick some up. We didn’t get lost searching for a party store but we did stop at one or two that were closed before we found one that was open. Interesting little store with the cashier in his bulletproof glass room, where you set your six-pack on the bulletproof turnstile and spin it into his room so he can scan it. It had been a while since I had to do that.
When Bruce and I finally arrived at The Eagle Theater there were three bands left before we were to take the stage. It didn’t take us long at all to find Scott, Jodon and the crew that made the trip down there to see us. The funny thing was is that everyone I talked to that made the trip down got lost or turned around at one point. Oh well, they all made it and that’s what counts.
The promoters ran a tight schedule that night, they had to in order to fit that many bands in the lineup. With twenty-minute sets and only a ten-minute change over I was a little concerned with us being able to get set up in time. Jodon, Scott and Bruce all tuned up their guitars and I assembled my pedals while the band ahead of us were playing.
We’re on…well in ten minutes…. First we have got to get set up which went better than I expected do in part to all the knowledgeable stage hands. Being a drummer you have an awful lot of gear to keep your eyes on, and I don’t know these people who are now handling my stuff and that can be a little nerve racking, but all went well.
OK, now were on, we start the first song and I am sitting behind the drum kit and its about 15 feet in front of me to the edge of the stage, beyond that I see about two rows of faces squeezed up tight to the stage, some I know but most I don’t and beyond that…nothing but pitch black. I look to my right and Scott is standing way over by the PA stack by the front of the stage, I glance to my left and there’s Bruce, way over there and in front of me right on the edge of the stage is Jodon nailing the first line of our first song. I smiled thinking we’ve never really been this far apart while playing but yet I felt closer to my band than I ever have. We played a killer set, people were screaming and five songs later we finished right on time.
We took 5th place that night out of 13 bands, not bad, pretty good actually considering the talent that was there that night. Even better than that were the new people we met and friends we made. If you were there we thank you for your support and be sure to check out the photos on the photos page.
